Early Release

Hi All,
Tomorrow (Wed. Dec. 9) is an early release day.
12:30 dismissal

Happy Holidays!

Happy December Everyone!

Our Author of the month has been Norman Bridwell. He writes the Clifford books that we love! We have been sharing holiday traditions with each other. It is special to hear how our friends celebrate holidays.
In math we are continuing with story problems and combining numbers to add up to a magic number. We are remembering that we have strategies to choose from when we are adding and subtracting.
We have been writing about special places and using describing words.
We also have been working on listening and following directions.
Mrs. Gordon says we have all been bitten by the READING BUG! She is so proud of us!
We hope everyone has a terrific holiday and a happy, safe vacation!

Love,
Mrs. Gordon's Class

November!

This month we will be reading books by Laura Numeroff. We decided that the stories and illustrations were perfect for first graders like us!
In math our new unit is geometry...all about shapes! We will sort, describe and use pattern blocks to fill in different designs. We will use new vocabulary words like fewer, more, outline, images and decomposing.
For writing we are still working on writing a sentence with punctuation. That means using a period, or a question mark or an exclamation point. That means that you are excited.
Our book boxes are filled and we are ready to continue our literacy centers. You can come in and help us during that time. it's 10:30-11:20 on Monday,Tuesday,no school Wednesday this week.

That's all for now!

First Grade Fabulous Farmers!

Our field trip to Alewive Brook Farm was terrific-even in the rain! Thank you to Caitlin Jordan for inviting us! We toured her farm, saw tractors, drank cider, fed chickens and felt like real farmers! All of us went into the fields and picked beans, beets, potatoes,  carrots, peppers and  pumpkins! We learned how a farm is run and that it is a lot of work every day. Thanks also to Sam and his family for their help. We talked and wrote about our trip. It is one we won't forget!

WE LOVE YOU CAITLIN!

Time for Chewonki!

We had a super time learning about mammals today with Mr. Matt! He brought us a live bat and a live duck! We also saw jaw bones, legs, skulls claws, beaks, fur and feathers! Leah dressed up in a bird costume and Jimmy dressed as a bear! We learned a lot about mammals! Mr. Matt said for us to tell you one thing we have learned today!
Thank you PTA for another great lesson from CHEWONKI! Yay!

Happy Fall Everyone!

We have been busy assessing students in literacy and math. I am proud of the progress they are making in following our school/classroom rules. Our modeling and discussions relating to kindness, responsibility and respect have been wonderful. Also we have our classroom rules added to these. We keep our hands/feet to ourselves, we are quiet in the hallway, we are polite and listen and we do our best.
Our class has been getting to know each other by greetings, games and activities.
Our Author studies have been on James Dean-Pete the Cat books and Junie B. Jones' books by Barbara Parks.
I am looking forward to meeting with you all for  Goal conferences!

Welcome To Our Class!

Hello Everyone!

I am so proud of my new FIRST GRADE STUDENTS! They all have settled in nicely. I am enjoying my new class. Thank you for sending the totes back on Thursdays and the homework folders back on Mondays. We now have art on Mondays.
We have been focusing on our school rules, learning our routine and getting to know each other! I am so pleased with our improving listening skills. We have started our first math unit and workbook. Also my students will be assessed by our reading teachers. We have started writing with a concentration on using spaces and writing down the sounds we hear. We are off to a great start!
